Emirates ID renewal: grace period, fines and steps

For residents, an Emirates ID is renewed together with the residence visa. Miss it and the late fine is small per day but adds up — and an expired card causes problems at banks and government counters long before the fine does.
The late fine
According to the UAE Government portal, an Emirates ID renewed more than a month after expiry is charged AED 20 for each day of delay, up to a maximum of AED 1,000.
The fine has to be paid before the renewal can be processed.
The steps for an employee
- Renew the residence visa first — the Emirates ID's validity follows the visa.
- Submit the Emirates ID application, usually alongside the visa renewal through ICP or GDRFA channels or a typing centre.
- Complete biometrics at an ICP centre if asked to.
- Collect the new card and keep a copy on the employee's file.
Where companies get caught out
Because the card is finished after the visa, it is easy to close the visa renewal and forget the card. Tracking the Emirates ID as its own date — not as a footnote to the visa — is what stops that.
