UAE visa overstay fines: what an employer needs to know

An employee's residence visa lapsing is one of the most common — and most avoidable — compliance costs for a UAE company. This guide explains how the fines work and how to stay clear of them.
The daily rate
The ICP standardised visa overstay fines at AED 50 per day from 11 February 2026. The same flat rate now applies to tourist, visit and residence visas, replacing the earlier variable rates.
A month past expiry is therefore roughly AED 1,500 per person — before counting the cost of arranging an urgent renewal or exit.
Grace periods
Grace periods depend on the visa category and on whether the visa has expired or been cancelled. Standard employment visas are most often cited at 30 days; published sources give other windows for some categories, and longer ones for golden and green visa holders.
Because the window varies, the safe assumption for an employer is to treat the expiry date itself as the deadline and start the renewal at least 30 days before it.
Why visas lapse inside companies
- The renewal depends on other documents being in order: a passport with at least six months left, a medical fitness test, valid health insurance, and an Emirates ID application.
- Dates are usually kept in a spreadsheet that nobody opens during leave, handovers or busy months.
- The person who used to track it has left, and nobody else knew the list existed.
- The employee assumes the company is handling it; the company assumes the employee will say something.
How to avoid the fine
- Keep every employee's visa expiry date in one list that is checked automatically, not when someone remembers.
- Start each renewal at least 30 days ahead, and check the passport, insurance and medical first — they are what stall a renewal.
- Make sure more than one person is told when a date is close, so leave or a resignation cannot hide it.
